Advertising Opportunities in Second Life

December 12th, 2006 · 5 Comments

There are number of ways to reach a Second Life audience, both in-world and out. Here’s a quick list of some of those opportunities. Second Life is still a young medium, so this list will continue to grow (indeed, it’s incomplete right now).

Most publishers have tiered pricing for truly in-world brands vs. real world brands. Some publications offer their magazines in-world as well as in PDF on a website. I’ve used this list in presentations to media planners and buyers more as an entre for them to understand Second Life, as opposed to a definiteve list. Indeed, I’ve challenged them to have their interns keep this list up to date and expand upon it by categorizing the media kits.

Sure, we’re at the beginning of this crazy lead user/entrepreneur/gamer/hobbyist/resident thing called the metaverse. But that’s where the innovation is happening. Things like this list are the tea leaves through which we can read the future. And really, the quality is surprisingly high. I tend to regularly read the Metaverse Messenger (who doesn’t, really?), SL Business, and LL’s Second Opinion.

There will be consolidation as time goes on, but I think if the SL community will be able to retain its core values of freedom, creativity, sociability, and inventiveness, we should continue see a creative cauldron of media in Second Life.

    Is MetaAdverse still alive?

A few others that come to mind immediately:
SL Universe & Snapzilla - popular picture site and forums
    http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/

SLNN - active SL news blog
    http://www.slnn.com/index.php

In the Grid - interesting SL news journal

I don’t know if MetaAdverse is still alive. Good question. But it is something you’d trip over if you went looking. Which points out the need for an active, updated list like this.

One of the problems here is one of historical context. I smell a great oppotunity for a journalist, or a blogger, to write a piece on the current state of marketing in virtual worlds.

Thanks for the other links. As more people ad links, I’ll consolidate into another post so there’s a convenient place for people to jump into Second Life advertising opportunities.

SLuniverse.com should definitely be included on this list. SLU is the longest running third party community site for SL, and has over 450,000 monthly visitors and 7 million page views. The site accepts SL advertising only.
